When these first-time clients purchased their home, they loved its overall layout and potential, but the finishes were beginning to show their age. Built approximately 10 years ago, the house still had many of its original builder-grade details. The homeowners wanted to introduce more character, personality, and architectural interest to make the space truly feel like their own.
The centerpiece of the renovation was a complete transformation of the main living room's fireplace and TV wall. What had previously been a simple, flat wall and dated fireplace became a dramatic focal point featuring custom-built shelving and cabinetry, painted in Sherwin-Williams Rain Cloud We removed the old wooden mantel, added library sconces for layered lighting, and installed a custom-fitted Winter Storm Quartzite surround. The surrounding built-ins were carefully designed and crafted to create a cohesive, high-quality finished feature that feels original to the home.
Throughout the first floor, main staircase, and two-story entryway, we installed custom picture-frame moulding to add architectural detail and timeless charm. Working from the homeowner's inspiration photos, we developed a moulding pattern and partnered with local Allegheny Millwork to create the exact trim profile she envisioned. Fresh paint throughout the first floor, staircase, entryway, and upstairs hallway brought the design together. The dramatic two-story entryway particularly benefited from these updates, transforming a once-ordinary space into an elegant architectural feature.
We also refreshed the formal office using a color-drenching technique usingSherwin Williams Mountain Pass, painting the walls and previously stained wood workin a rich, dark color to create a sophisticated, modern atmosphere. In the first-floor powder room, updated trim paint, and statement wallpaper brought fresh personality to a smaller space.
This project demonstrates how thoughtful design, custom craftsmanship, and carefully selected finishes can completely change the character of a home without altering its footprint. Transforming your home doesn't always require a major renovation. Sometimes, the most impactful changes come from thoughtful updates to the details that define a space. Fresh paint, custom trim and moulding, updated fireplace surrounds, wallpaper, and window treatments can completely change the look and feel of a home by adding personality, character, and timeless appeal.
Whether your home feels dated, lacks architectural interest, or simply doesn't reflect your personal style, these targeted improvements can make a dramatic difference without the time, expense, or disruption of a full-scale renovation. This project is a perfect example of how a series of intentional, achievable updates can make an ordinary house feel like a truly custom home.
