When these homeowners purchased their midcentury modern home in McCandless, they knew it had great character—but also needed thoughtful updates to better fit their lifestyle. Having worked with our team on a previous home, they reached out shortly after closing to begin planning improvements.
The existing layout had strong potential but felt dated and underutilized. We focused on improving both the functionality and overall aesthetic of the space.
A key feature of the renovation was the updated wet bar area, which now includes custom cabinetry, mirrored backsplash detailing, and open shelving. Adjacent to the bar, we incorporated a dedicated desk area—providing a functional workspace that supports the homeowners’ work-from-home needs while integrating seamlessly into the design.
The original wood-burning fireplace was converted to gas, maintaining its ability to heat the space while offering a cleaner, more efficient, and modern solution. High-end tile was used to reface the fireplace, creating a striking focal point that complements the home’s midcentury aesthetic.
New flooring throughout the lower level ties the entire space together, creating a cohesive look that connects visually with the rest of the home.
Beyond the main living area, we reconfigured an existing bathroom and adjacent storage space to improve usability. By adjusting the layout and repositioning the shower, the space now functions as a full bathroom with better accessibility and overall efficiency.
During construction, we also took the opportunity to run a new gas line to the kitchen, allowing the homeowners to upgrade from an electric to gas range—an improvement that enhances both performance and long-term functionality.
This project is a great example of how a connected lower-level space can be transformed into a true extension of the home. Through thoughtful design and strategic updates, the result is a functional, modern living area that aligns with how the homeowners use their space every day.
