When the homeowner of this Wexford property began thinking about improving his backyard, he was starting from scratch. He had seen one of our past projects and liked what we had built, but he had never taken on a renovation before and wasn’t sure where to begin. Like many first-time renovators, he needed guidance through the entire process — from understanding design options to making decisions about layout, materials, and functionality. Our team worked closely with him to explore all possibilities and gradually develop a vision for the space. The backyard itself was disjointed and underutilized, with overgrown areas and little structure tying the outdoor spaces together. One of the homeowner’s preferences was the look and feel of a traditional deck — including railings and defined spaces — even though the yard itself was a walk-out grade where a typical deck wasn’t necessary. To achieve the design he wanted, we constructed a ground level deck that incorporates many of the visual and functional elements of a standard raised deck, creating the aesthetic he liked while working naturally with the property’s layout.
The project ultimately evolved into a multi-zone outdoor living space that feels connected and intentional. A covered area now provides comfortable shelter from the elements, creating a place where the family can relax outdoors regardless of weather. Adjacent to the covered area, an uncovered space expands the entertaining space and allows for more flexibility when hosting friends and family.
Stairs connect the covered area to the basement, improving circulation throughout the property and tying previously separate areas of the yard together.
Because the homeowner was navigating his first renovation, the design process included several changes and refinements as the project progressed.
